In order to make policies
for the use of nuclear energy in a peaceful manner, the Atomic Energy
Commission was established on August 10, 1948. In order to execute these
policies, the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) was established in 1954. All
programs of nuclear energy are done under the aegis of the Prime Minister.
Research Centre
(i) Bhabha
Atomic Research Centre (BARC) - Mumbai, Maharashtra.
-
This was established in the year 1957 as a nuclear power establishment in
Trombay near Mumbai and in 1967 AD it was renamed 'Bhabha Atomic Research
Center, Bark' in memory of its founder Dr. Homi Jahangir Bhabha. This is the
main national centre for research and development work on nuclear energy and
other related subjects.
(ii) Indira
Gandhi Atomic Research Centre (IGCAR) - Kalpakkam, Tamilnadu.
It was established in Kalpakkam, Chennai for research and development of fast
breeder technology in 1971. IGIGCAR designed Fast Breeder Reactor FBTR, which
uses native blended fuel with plutonium and natural uranium radish. This will
help India to generate nuclear energy from its abundant thorium resources. This
research centre also developed the country's first neutron reactor 'Kamini'.
Dhruv, Apsara and Cyrus are used in preparation of radio isotope as well as in
research, basic and practical research and training in atomic technologies and
materials.
(iii)
Advanced Technology Centre (CAT) - Indore In 1984, the main
work of establishing Indore Meyen High Technology Centre was to develop
technology in the field of laser and accelerator.
(iv)
Convertible Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC) - Kolkata.
A research and development center of the Department of Atomic Energy,
Government of India. Here is research in basic and applied nuclear science.
This centre has 224 cm
cyclotron installed which is the first of its kind in India. It has been
working since 1977. From this, ray beans of different energy are proton, deuteron,
alpha particle and other heavy ions.
(v) Directorate of Atomic Research Investigation and Research
(AMD) - Hyderabad.
